Parent Expectations 6-8
Classroom Interaction & Feedback:
Promote student autonomy and responsibility by encouraging students to take ownership of their learning and behavior while providing them with choices in activities and assignments.
Please provide specific and actionable feedback. Emphasize the quality of student work in your feedback, provide detailed instructions on how to enhance it, and ensure it is user-friendly, accessible, and timely.
Foster student self-reflection: Allow students to reflect on their work, especially when they are part of the goal-setting process, to enhance learning.
Classroom Management:
Adapt strategies to different needs: Recognize that every group of students has varying needs and may require a unique approach to classroom management. Middle schoolers are transitioning and may benefit from guidance on navigating the expectations of multiple teachers.
Consider diverse learning needs. Provide a range of activities during study time to cater to students who learn best in different environments (e.g., quiet space, group work).
Address off-task behavior promptly. Respond to inappropriate or off-task conduct as soon as possible, ideally in private, to prevent negative feelings from escalating.
Administration Communication:
Communicate consistently and respectfully: Teachers adhere to ethical codes and follow school policies while communicating clearly and respectfully with administrators.
Advocate for students: Serve as advocates for students by highlighting their needs and concerns and maintaining accurate student records.
Lead professional learning communities: Teachers may lead or participate in professional learning communities to contribute to school improvement and share best practices (Parent Communication and Engagement Expectations, n.d.).
