Teacher Expectations K-5

Classroom Interaction & Feedback:

Foster positive relationships: Teachers establish a positive classroom environment built on respect and rapport, fostering a climate of learning, equity, and excellence. This involves creating a safe and respectful environment where students feel valued, respected, and included.

Frequent and timely feedback: Provide immediate feedback to students as they work, focusing on specific aspects of their efforts and behaviors rather than just their "talent." This can be done through check-ins during learning activities or informal assessments.

Focus on effort and process: Praise and acknowledge effort and growth-oriented behaviors, celebrating mistakes as part of the learning process.

Classroom Management:

Establish clear expectations and routines: Develop a comprehensive classroom behavior management plan and explicitly teach students classroom rules and procedures at the beginning of the year. Consistency is essential for applying these rules.

Utilize positive reinforcement: Recognize and reward positive behaviors and contributions to the classroom community.

Involve students in setting guidelines: Encourage students to help establish classroom rules and expectations, resulting in greater buy-in and more mutually understood norms.

Parent Communication:

Regular updates: Keep parents informed about classroom activities, assignments, and student progress through various means like newsletters, email, or digital platforms.

Share positive feedback. Communicate positive aspects of a student's performance, behavior, or improvements to parents.

Parent-teacher conferences: Hold open houses and parent-teacher conferences to facilitate face-to-face interaction and two-way communication.

Administration Communication:

Share data and trends. Communicate high-level insights and trends regarding student progress and classroom performance to administrators.

Discuss educational goals. Explain how data aligns with educational goals and identify opportunities for improvement.

Frame data in context: Present information within the larger school or district narrative to engage administrators effectively (20 Classroom Management Strategies and Techniques [+ Downloadable List], n.d.).
